01Where is my stopcock likely to be?
In most houses it is under the kitchen sink, where the mains enters. Other common spots are a downstairs cloakroom, under the stairs, inside a utility cupboard or beneath a floor hatch near the front door. In flats it may be in a hallway cupboard or a shared riser. Turn it clockwise until it stops. If it will not move, the outside stop tap under a small cover at the boundary shuts the supply too.
02What should I do while I wait for the plumber?
Once the water is off, open the cold taps to drain what is left in the pipes. If water is near electrics, or coming through a light fitting, switch the electricity off at the consumer unit if it is safe to reach. Move valuables and furniture out of the way, put down towels and buckets, and take a few photos for your insurer before anything is cleared up.
03Is a dripping tap an emergency?
Not usually. An emergency is water you cannot control: a burst pipe, a leak coming through a ceiling, a drain backing up into the house or a cylinder discharging. A dripping tap, a slow cistern or a noisy pipe can wait for a normal visit. If you are unsure, ring and describe what you see. Norbert will tell you honestly whether it needs someone tonight or can wait for the morning.
04Does the 24-hour call-out mean someone is always available?
The 24-hour emergency call-out is Norbert's own promise, and it means you can ring at any hour and reach him directly. Vision Plumbing is one plumber, not a call centre, so he cannot be in two places at once. What he will do is tell you straight away when he can get to you, so you can decide what to do next.
05Can a burst pipe be repaired on the same visit?
In most cases, yes. Where the damaged pipe can be reached, the split section is cut out and replaced there and then. If the pipe is buried in a wall or floor, or the fitting needs a specific part, Norbert will stop the leak, restore water to the rest of the house where he can, and return to finish the job. Either way the permanent repair carries a one year warranty.
06What if the emergency involves a smell of gas?
Leave the property, do not use switches, and call the National Gas Emergency Service from outside; the number is on your gas meter and bill. Vision Plumbing does no gas work. Norbert can help locate a gas leak once the supply is made safe, but any repair to gas pipework is handed to a registered gas engineer. A water leak is his job; a gas leak is the gas emergency service first.
